Harbour Exchange
On this site on the Isle of Dogs, three back up generators were required. Due to the design of the building very limited space was available. On one side of the building space was made available for one large generator in a car park on the first floor. On the opposite of the building, space had been allocated for two smaller generators. Height and weight restrictions had to be carefully considered in the prepartion of the risk assessments and method statements for a safe system of work.
Our biggest challenge was to install a 14 tonne generator on a suspended floor and ramp that was designed to take the weight of a car. We employed the services of a specialist contractor to erect a support structure on the floor below so that we could push and pull the generator 25 metres inside the building without compromising the integrity of the struture. We had limited time because the car park floors could not be used during the installation. We completed the project in the space of six days from start to finish. Inside the building we had 15 mm of clearance beneath the concrete beams supporting the floors above. We used a 7 tonne fork lift and 80 tonne mobile crane on this project along with a wide range of lifting and pulling equipment. After the install of the large generator, we returned at a later date to install the other two in the basement car park.
